If you have driven around Kampala this year, you must have gone through one of the eight newly constructed junctions installed with traffic lights. These new and signalized junctions are easing the flow of traffic around the city. In return residents are benefiting from reduced travel time, fuel consumption, as well as enjoying a cleaner environment due to reduced car fumes. These are found along Fairway, Bukoto, Bwaise or Makerere Hill road.
The new signalized junctions are funded by the World Bank and Government of Uganda. This five year project is worth US$183.7 Million. The Second Kampala Institutional and Infrastructure Development project is implemented by KCCA and it started in May 2015. The project aims at widening and constructing city roads, drainage and associated infrastructure to improve urban mobility for inclusive economic growth.
Currently, a total of four additional junctions are nearing completion along the second section of Makerere Hill Road and Bakuli-Nakulabye-Kasubi road. Similarly, signalized pedestrian crossing have been installed near Makerere College School and Makerere University. Phase two construction of roads will have 10 junctions along John Babiha/Acacia Avenue, Nakawa - Ntinda Road, Lukuli Road in Makindye Division. Over 20 more junctions are due to be constructed on several roads around Kampala, once funding is secured.
The new signalized junctions are fitted with traffic sensors to ascertain the load of traffic in order to regulate the flow of cars with in the junction. In addition, all new roads and junctionsdo have clear signage, paved walk ways and signal controlled pedestrian crossings to ensure safety.

5. Makerere Hill four lane Road – three signalized traffic light junctions and one signalized pedestrian crossing
6. Bakuli-Nakulabye – Kasubi four lane road – three signalized traffic light junctions

JICA too, is financing the construction of four additional junctions around Kololo and Nagulu. The junctions will be functional by December, 2017. The locations are Kati Kati junction, Game, Jinja Road Junction near Lugogo Mall, the Junction towards Naguru, off Lugogo By pass, the Junction at Kololo Independence Ground.
CALL TO ACTION
The appeal to residents of Kampala is to protect new roads and junctions. Motorists should observe traffic regulations and respect traffic light signals. All motorists must ensure that no trucks, cars or boda-bodas are parked at the junction oron walkways, for a transformed and improved Kampala.
