UGANDA CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION WITH A FOCUS ON LASTING PEACE
PUBLISHED — 21st, March 2024Today, Uganda is commemorating the International Day of Education with a belated celebration at Kololo Ceremonial grounds, focusing on the theme "Education for Lasting Peace."
This significant event, established by the United Nations General Assembly, is globally observed on January 24, 2024, but Uganda opted for a belated celebration to amplify its commitment to education and peace-building efforts.
The day commenced with zeal as ministers and students gathered to participate in various activities.
Hon. John Chrysestom Muyingo the Minister of State for Higher Education led the flagging-off ceremony, starting a march from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Grounds, accompanied by enthusiastic students.
He was welcomed to KCCA by the Ag. Director of Education and Social Services Charles Maginot who represented the KCCA Executive Director, Dorothy Kisaka.
“We recognize education as an important tool for bettering society. Government is committed to ensuring that all children in Uganda complete education cycle.’’ Muyingo said.
He called upon on the parents to support their children, love them so that they are able to complete the education cycle by providing the necessary support including feeding.
Hon. Peter Ogwang, Minister of State for Sports, led another group of students from Kitante Primary School, while Hon. Joyce Kaducu Moruku, Minister of State for Primary Education, started a march from Nakasero Primary School, underscoring inclusivity across all educational levels.
Magnot said the significance of the International Day of Education could not be overstated, as it highlights the fundamental right of every individual to receive a quality education, regardless of his or her background.
KCCA plays a crucial role in this regard by overseeing 22 government-aided secondary schools and 79 government primary schools within the capital city, offering free education to all city residents.
KCCA's ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of education in the city are evident through its collaborations with education partners and supporters.
Reflecting on Uganda's educational journey, the progress is remarkable since the introduction of universal education 27 years ago.
From enrolling 2.5 million pupils in 1996 to exceeding 8.6 million by 2023, the nation has demonstrated a significant stride in achieving Universal Primary Education (UPE) over the past 27 years.
This progress underscores Uganda's commitment to providing accessible and quality education to its citizens, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) - ensuring inclusive and equitable education for all by 2030.
Uganda's commitment to SDG 4 is evident through various initiatives focusing on community engagement, curriculum enhancements, and infrastructure upgrades aimed at strengthening the education system and ensuring a safe, inclusive, and conducive learning environment for all learners.
