The police in Kampala have arrested a man suspected of vandalizing streetlights across the city. Ismah Mugisha was taken into custody on Tuesday and is currently being held at the Central Police Station.

He is expected to be charged with theft and malicious damage of government property.

Mugisha’s arrest was made possible by the swift actions of vigilant city dwellers who noticed the suspect digging up electric cables near Nakawa railway crossing point. They immediately alerted the police, leading to his arrest.

Kampala has over 7,000 streetlights installed across the city. The recent spate of streetlight vandalism has left many areas in the city dark and unsafe for city dwellers who have to navigate the streets at night.

Speaking about the arrest, Simon Kasyate the KCCA spokesperson said, "We applaud the actions of the vigilant city dwellers who helped in the apprehension of the suspect. We call upon all citizens to take action and help us protect public infrastructure, including street lights, which are crucial in ensuring the safety and security of all residents in the city."

Kasyate further added, "We want to assure all city dwellers that KCCA is committed to working with the police to ensure that those responsible for vandalizing public infrastructure are brought to justice."

The arrest of the suspect is a reminder that all citizens have a role to play in ensuring the safety and security of their city. It is a call to action for all citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity that may threaten public infrastructure.

Let us all work together to protect our city and make it a safe and secure place for all to live in.
