NAKIVUBO CHANNEL DEVELOPMENT NOT YET APPROVED-KIGENYI

PUBLISHED — 25th, August 2025

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has reaffirmed its control over the Nakivubo Channel and clarified that no approval has yet been granted for any development along the drainage system.

During Monday’s KCCA council sitting chaired by Speaker Zahara Luyirika, Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi emphasized, “The Physical Planning Committee has not concluded the review of the application submitted by Ham Enterprises. No authorization has been given for any works on the channel.”

The clarification follows concerns after a section of the Nakivubo Channel was temporarily hoarded off, raising questions about potential private development.

Kigenyi stressed that all proposed developments must first undergo thorough review and receive formal authorization before any work proceeds.

KCCA council members stressed that the authority remains committed to protecting the city’s drainage systems, wetlands, and public land from unauthorized activities.

Moses Kataabu, the councilor representing the area, confirmed that the council has never resolved to hand over the channel to any private investor.

“On April 3, we discussed the drainage challenges in our area and ways to keep Nakivubo Channel clean. At no point did we give it to any private entity,” Kataabu said.

Council members also called for investigations into land titles issued along drainage channels to ensure transparency and proper urban planning.

KCCA leadership reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable urban development, proper planning, and safeguarding Kampala’s critical infrastructure.

The authority continues to monitor city planning initiatives, ensuring that Kampala’s drainage channels and wetlands remain protected for the benefit of all residents.
