MTN Mobile Money has donated assorted food items to women city cleaners working with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in recognition of their contribution to keeping Kampala clean and organized.

The donation, made during a courtesy visit to City Hall on Friday, benefited 100 women drawn from road teams, enforcement units and gardening crews.

The items included cooking oil, wheat flour, sugar, rice, spaghetti and juice, among other essentials, offered as part of the company’s outreach activities during the holy month of Ramadan.

Speaking during the event, Peter Ocen, General Manager for Financial Operations at MTN MoMo, said the donation was meant to appreciate the dedication of women who work tirelessly to maintain the city’s cleanliness and dignity.

“These are not just road workers. They are mothers who contribute to the dignity of Kampala,” Ocen said. “When we support them, we are supporting families and communities.”

He noted that Ramadan is a season of compassion, generosity and reflection, making it an appropriate time to extend support to workers who serve the city every day.

Ocen also thanked KCCA for its partnership with MTN Mobile Money and pledged continued collaboration, including providing proper gear to support city cleaners in their work.

“These women wake up very early every day to ensure the city remains clean and orderly. We appreciate their dedication and service,” he said.

During the event, KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki called for deeper collaboration between MTN Mobile Money and the city authority to improve urban services.

Buzeki said the partnership could extend to several initiatives aimed at improving service delivery in Kampala, including waste management, garbage sorting and construction of bus stop shelters.

“There is a lot we can work on together to improve service delivery,” she said. “Support us in waste management, in sorting garbage, and in developing bus stop shelters so we can improve mobility and comfort for our residents.”

She also asked the telecom company to support KCCA’s child rescue programs and help promote responsible trading practices in the city.

“Encourage your agents who operate on the streets to trade within designated areas,” Buzeki said, referring to KCCA’s ongoing campaign to restore order in the city.

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago thanked MTN for recognizing the contribution of women city cleaners, noting that many of them face difficult working conditions but remain committed to serving the city.

“Thank you for thinking about these women who go through a lot in their work,” Lukwago said. “Supporting them is a meaningful gesture.”

KCCA Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi, praised the gesture, noting that city cleaners play a critical role in safeguarding public health and maintaining Kampala’s image as Uganda’s capital.

He commended the women, noting that their work represents the authority’s commitment to service delivery.

“Many people judge the performance of KCCA by what they see you doing every morning,” Kigenyi told the cleaners. “You wake up early to clean the city and we commend you for the great work.”

Dr. Sarah Zalwango, Director of Public Health and Environment at KCCA, said the cleaners work day and night to ensure the city remains safe and sanitary.

“Our city cleaners are very dedicated. Their work contributes greatly to improving health outcomes and keeping Kampala clean,” Zalwango said while thanking MTN MoMo for supporting the initiative.

For the women, the donation served as both a practical gesture of support and recognition of the vital role they play in keeping Kampala clean, healthy and welcoming.
