Road & drainage construction updates, as of March 2020

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) received a time extension of 18 months to complete roads and drainage channels by June 2021 under the Second Kampala Institutional & Infrastructure Project financed by the World Bank.

So far, the first set of roads and signalized junctions within Kampala including Bwaise junction, Mambule Road, Kiira Road, Kabira junction in Bukoto, Fairway Junction, Makerere Hill Road – from Wandegeya to Nakulabye, and Bakuli through Nakulabye to Kasubi Road were completed in 2018.  

On-going Road Construction

The status of construction works are as follows for Kulambiro Ring Road, Najeera Link, Kabuusu-Bunamwaya-Lweza, Ntinda-Nakawa road, and Lukuli road:

  • Utilities have been relocated – water and electricity on all roads.
  • Installation of culverts for drainage is nearing completion.
  • Road excavation and widening has been done on most roads.
  • The reinstatement of perimeter walls affected by road works was done.

What remains to be done?

  • Filling up the excavated road with layers of marram and tarmac
  • Construction of walkways for pedestrians
  • Construction of signalized junctions
  • Marking of road lanes and installation of signage
  • Installation of street lights
  • Landscaping

Drainage

  • The contract for reviewing the design of Lubigi & Nakamiro drainage improvement works was approved.  This includes the supervision of construction works.
  • The civil works contract for Lubigi & Nakamiro drainage improvement are awaiting clearance to enable construction to start.
  • The consultant is working on a detailed design and Diagnostic Assessment of the Rehabilitation and Expansion of Nakivubo Channel.
  • KCCA has issued a notice to property owners along Nakamiro Channel to demolish all paid properties.

Securing Right of Way

KCCA appreciates residents of Kulambiro, Kabuusu-Bunamwaya-Lweza, and Lukuli for allowing the project to construct the road on their land at no cost.  In return, KCCA promises quality infrastructure, improved traffic flow, reduced floods and improved livelihood. The overall progress on voluntary acquisition of land by signing Consent Agreements stands at 93.5%.

Kampala’s infrastructure network is changing with support received from Government of Uganda and key partners, over the past 8 and a half years.
