KCCA BOSS INSPECTS CITY ROAD WORKS, DEMANDS SAFETY AND QUALITY
PUBLISHED — 5th, June 2025
Improved safety standards, cleanliness, and timely delivery of quality work were the key demands made by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director, Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki, during a spot-check of ongoing road construction projects in the city on Wednesday, June 4.
The inspection covered Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road, Salaama Road, and 8th, 7th, and 5th Streets all under the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP). The projects are part of a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at easing traffic flow, enhancing pedestrian safety, and improving drainage in the capital.
Hajjat Buzeki, who was accompanied by Eng. Justus Akankwasa, KCCA’s Director of Engineering and Technical Services, and other officials, took time to assess the progress of the works and engaged directly with contractors on site.
She emphasized the need for strict adherence to occupational health and safety standards and urged contractors to install proper signage, cover all open manholes, and keep the sites free from hazards.
“We must not only focus on delivering these roads, but also on how we do it. Worker safety and public safety must come first,” Buzeki said.
She also instructed contractors to water the roads regularly to control dust, which she noted was affecting businesses and public health.
In addition, she directed the removal of heaps of soil and construction debris, and urged contractors to keep pedestrian routes open and accessible throughout the works.
“These routine inspections are essential. We are here to ensure that standards are being followed and that the quality of work meets the expectations of the people of Kampala,” Buzeki said.
She reaffirmed KCCA’s commitment to maintaining high standards and ensuring that the city’s infrastructure meets the demands of a modern urban population.
“We want roads that will serve this city for generations. That means working smart, working safely, and working with integrity,” Buzeki said.
The Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project, which is funded by the African Development Bank and the Government of Uganda, covers the upgrade of at least 69.9 kilometres of roads across the city, along with improved drainage systems, traffic lights, and walkways for pedestrians and cyclists.
